My theory is more that the neocons represent a financial reactionary coup over the normative “conservative nationalist liberal” America which effectively made it impossible for America to not commit suicide in order to maintain a global empire.

Nixon JFK etc both would have accepted Russia into the fraternity of nations, but not Bush or Reagan etc. America had defeated the USSR on its own terms (providing a better quality of life for the working class)— but sacrificed this in order to prop up the oligarchs
