i was a postdoc at a korean university. one time i had plans with my girlfriend, so i told my boss i wouldn’t be coming in on saturday. he thought an appropriate response was to lock me in the lab monday (also a holiday) from 6pm to 5am, for a discussion about my work ethic

Since 2006, South Korea's government has spent $270bn, or just over 1% of GDP a year, on babymaking incentives. Here's the dismal result:

two students in my lab had 5+ year boyfriends, which they both broke up with about 2 months into joining the lab

the professor was reported to the university for human rights issues by about 9 students/researchers (almost everyone he had ever advised), the university did nothing

if you are a professor and concerned about this feel free to dm me

(professors only, sorry internet strangers)

here is the message i sent the professor that triggered an 11 hour “conversation” by the way. this was the breaking point after having worked 12+ hour work days, 7 days a week, for about 6 months straight, and yet getting virtually nothing due to horrible mismanagement

the actual situation is many, many times worse than i have written here or can write on a public forum

again, happy to privately discuss with professor or similar (senior rs in industry, etc)

korean universities are proud of the abuse. take for instance, this account of kaist’s history, straight from the kaist website archives.kaist.ac.kr/eng/history.do#

@airkatakana Kaist used to have the brightest engineering students.

Now they get students that are sad and depressed because they couldn’t get into med school.

Culturally Korea is so fucked up.
7
lots of people bringing up kaist for no reason in particular it seems

8
the unnamed university saw messages like this and did nothing, in fact they helped the professor cover it up

9
also willing to discuss with media that would report on this responsibly (saying again, but the actual issues are much worse than i can type out here publicly)
10
korean universities such as kaist have robust policies for student suicides, as 0.1% of the student population is killing themselves

i would really like to share additional docs, including hard evidence of real criminal activity going on in this unspecified university, with media. it would be helpful if you could @ your favorite news outlet or journalist so they could become aware and contact me

to give you a sense of how unhinged my former postdoc advisor was:

1) actually nearly 100% of the reason i grew this account was to get help in case i needed danger

2) i just checked his twitter and it looks like the below now, i have no doubt this is targeted directly at me

important additional information

kaist @kaistpr professor jinjoon "vendetta" lee @jinjoon_lee forced me to send a fairly large sum of money to his wife's bank account, under threat of withdrawing an offer to be a postdoc in his lab. university leadership such as president kwang hyung lee did nothing about this
