As Katsuki entered the dorm common room, he immediately heard a familiar soft muttering… a barely audible stream of nerd-consciousness muffled by a scarred hand that rested in a thoughtful pose on Deku’s chin.

There was a time when it would have sounded like nails scraping across a chalkboard… a time that seemed a million years ago, but in reality was only a few months… The temporal distortion of brutal war sat between then and now.

But the muttering sounded new now… as if it resonated off the fondness growing in Katsuki’s heart… funny how a heart so torn and tattered could feel so much more now, like broken steel reforged to be even stronger.

Deku was still so lost in his musings that he didn’t even hear Katsuki approach his couch from behind and look down on green curls, still damp from an after-training shower.

The name ‘Izuku’ hung in Katsuki’s throat… but for some reason he couldn’t bring himself to interrupt the damn nerd…

And why the fuck was Katsuki’s mind filled with images of the forests of their childhood, still damp from morning dew?

He could smell the crisp wet leaves… and hear the babbling of water against river rocks as he watched Deku scrolling through All Might merch websites… babbling that turned into white noise… then back into the nerd’s muttering…

Katsuki’s hand reached out to lightly run his fingers across the tips of the curls, softer than a water bug skating across a pond, incredibly careful not to break the fragile surface tension…

The words ‘You’re fucking beautiful’ sat on the tip of Katsuki’s tongue and he had to bite it to prevent them from escaping.

“Kacchan…?”

The hand retracted before the green mop tipped back and emerald eyes were looking up at him. “What’re you doing back there?”

Katsuki looked away, ignoring the heat he felt on his cheeks. “Tch… If I were a villain, you’d be dead right now… don’t let your damn guard down, nerd.”

“That’s great, Kacchan! You’ve always needed to work on your stealth...” Chapped lips formed into an annoying competitive smirk.

Katsuki let out an irritated huff. “You think you’re so slick now, huh?” His hand un-retracted to dig into the damp forest and roughly rub the other boy’s head, stealthily fulfilling his need to touch the locks.

Deku leaned into the touch, eyes closing, giggling and nodding like a little shit as he nuzzled the barrel of a Howitzer cannon.

A gross mushy feeling thrilled through Katsuki’s stomach and the words ‘You're so fucking embarrassing’ were loaded into his throat to continue the banter… but what came out was:

“You’re so fucking beautiful…”
