Utilitarianism was the real target of their ire— & that could be said to be the flowering of the nascent utilitarianism in the russian form of nihilism which ultimately informed their socialists. Marx held on to more of Adam Smith than most realize.

It was this nascent RATIONALISM & UTILITARIANISM that Dostoevsky most opposed in the socialists of his day. He was not opposed to reforms for the betterment of his people. He went to jail for writing about the horrible conditions of his time in POOR FOLK.
