They have a competetive advantage in the supply chain for raw materials. It's absolutely dumb to think you can return the world to the set up following the two world wars. Things have changed drastically.

Perhaps we could have slowed the offshoring of industrial labor but I really doubt that it could have been put off forever. Automation is just the nail in the coffin. We can have manufacturing here, but it will be on a smaller scale. No iPhone factories are going to open in Ohio.

UBI is a better solution than making the labor force compete for hellish Foxconn jobs. The fordist era is over in the first world & is playing out in the third. We, instead, need to find what comes AFTER fordism.

I think UBI could actually promote things like urban agriculture- a decentralized foodchain is a necessity now that our heartland topsoil is nearly depleted of nutrients. A family of two getting $24k/yr at base can more easily become small time farmers.

Jobs that are too risky for people in precarious situations can become options with UBI. Local bakeries etc- more likely to open if people don't expect absolute ruin if they fail.

The biggest new employer in my hometown, a deindustrialized zone, is a craft beer manufacturer reappropriated old factory spaces. Very good jobs. It's industrial work, but not mega-industrial. It's a purely local product not available outside the plant. It makes MILLIONS.

It's also been a yuge boon to the local restaurant biz- as people drive out to get this beer (it's the top rated in the nation) & then go out to eat at BYOB joints. It's a source of regional pride now. Very good stuff.

The guys who started it worked in other fields, then saved up, started selling it from their garage, eventually got a factory, now have expanded twice! All in like 7 years. Imagine how many more ppo would try such things if they knew they had at least $12k a year if they failed!

Marijuana being legalized recently has also been a boon to urban agriculture- where profits used to go to black market & cartels, they now go to employees & get taxes for education funds. Good shit.

We should not strive to return to monopolistic megacorps- that is the era of burgeoning production & centralization- we need decentralized small-to-medium sized industries & biznesses furnished with UBI floating local & regional economies.

Less coca cola mcdonalds budweiser- more small time regional production needed. Would rather go to the local diner than get burger king. Would rather drink your local beer than coors. This is what will give relief to places abandoned by megacorps.

How many amateur-anythings will be able to experiment when they are not afraid of paying rent? Could you imagine Hollywood getting busted by a bunch of regional filmmakers? I can. It's why Youtube & Twitch are more important than film celebs to the youth now.

By bailing out everyone with a trickle-up economy- we'll see more money going to local economies, to non-automated jobs- small factories would rather have employees than try to raise funds from the start for pure automated machines.

Maybe people will buy less crap from ikea if there's a good local carpenter who can rest with at least $12k/yr at base- not have to compete so harshly with walmart furniture- cuz everyone will have more to spend.
