before they start mending their relationship, katsuki observes izuku a lot. always at a safe distance, and never long enough to risk being caught, but his eyes never leave him. they never did, really, but now it's more painfully obvious to him how he's inexplicably

drawn to the nerd just as much as the nerd seems to be drawn to him.

it's embarrassingly shocking for katsuki when he notices how other people flound around izuku so easily. they're free in their interest for him, genuine, careless, not tied back by the weight of a heavy past.
3
they seek him and joke around, showering him with attention and flustering him with praises. izuku is shy about it at first, not really used to having friends (katsuki is way too aware that is his fault), but eventually, he gets comfortable. katsuki can tell by the way his
4
shoulders relax and his smile shows dimples. he teases back, and loudly laughs with his head thrown back at the jokes they share in between classes or at lunchtime. izuku glows around his new friends, like a well-polished diamond put under the light.
5
it's like he finally feels comfortable in his own freckled skin, like having good friends for the first time in his life showed him what he had been missing all this time and he wasn't willing to waste another second without it. he looks grateful, happy and well loved.
6
and katsuki?

katsuki is alone.

yes, he has people around him too, but katsuki had learnt to think the worst of those who dared to come near him. he would later realize this time was different for him, sure, but right now his walls are still up and sturdy.
7
he'd only known how the warmth of a true friendship felt like from the boy he grew up with and who he could barely call a classmate now. it's ridiculous, and infuriating and stupid to think they had a whole life of shared memories but now we're closer to strangers than friends.
8
and katsuki is to blame for that, just as he was for his own loneliness and heartache.

he wasn't selfish enough to not feel somewhat happy for izuku for having found people who loved him for who he was.
9
and partially, he feels relieved, too, because there’s people fixing what he broke and izuku is finally learning katsuki’s harmful words were lies and nothing more.

but it's also painful, to face the consequences of his actions and live watching what could have been if he
10
had not chosen a path full of mistakes. he's leaned many lessons since then, and realized many things. but it's still not enough for the guilt to lessen.

pushing everyone away has earn him a very lonesome life, but at least he's not hurting anyone anymore.
11
in the secrecy of his heart, he longs for izuku to give him one last chance, as selfish as that may be. but it seems like he's not made to enjoy the kind of freedom that forgiveness brings, because no matter how hard he tries,
12
he can't bring himself to ask. maybe it's not really forgivess what he wants, maybe he's tired of lying to himself like that.

but he's not ready to say it out loud yet, still entrusting of himself to risk making promises. so for now, he'll keep watching from far afar.
13
izuku will keep getting stronger, and smarter and sweeter and charming, and katsuki will be proud while he pretends it doesn't also makes him a little sad.

because the truth is, more often than not, katsuki finds himself missing the only friend he ever had.
