Some swimmers struggle to swim fast because they can’t get their stroke rate up. Rather than constantly reminding them, using a tempo trainer provides them with external feedback as to whether they’re being effective at maintaining a high stroke rate.

You can use stroke rates to solve the opposite problem as well. If some swimmers are simply spinning through the water, I’ll give them a tempo trainer, use a slower stroke rate, and ask them to swim as fast as they can.

Because they can’t move their arms faster, they have to learn to swim big to go fast, rather than just spin. Same tool, different problem, same results. By understanding the problem in front of us, and the options we have available, we can find solutions that make a difference.
