How you act in church is different from how you act watching football after. We all code-switch and play different roles.

This shifting is actually a powerful tool for high performance.

In performance psych, we call it adopting an alter ego: 99, Black Mamba, Agent Zero, Sasha Fierce, Slim Shady

It allows you to flip a switch and step into the arena. Here is the science of performance identity.

Aaron Judge says that "Aaron" might get scared, but "No. 99" isn't.

He steps onto the field and transforms into someone else. This creates psychological space.

It separates who you are as a human from who you are as a performer.

That buffer helps alleviate the crushing pressure.

It signals to your brain what mindset is required right now. It helps you get in the zone immediately.

You don't drag the failure of one role into the success of another. It keeps your life compartmentalized.

A game face must be authentic to work long-term.

You can't be a saint on Sunday and a terror on Monday. Your core values must remain consistent across all roles.

The behavior shifts, but the person remains the same. Do not fracture your identity to perform.

Be intentional about how you use your game face.

Use it to protect your psyche and enhance your focus. But don't let it fragment who you are.

Wear the hat, play the role, then take it off.

You are always more than just the performer.

One lesson I've learned as an exercise scientist:

The human body is way more complex than we give it credit for.

Every few years a new pathway or chemical gets declared THE KEY...

Only to realize a few years later it's one of dozens that matters for a small adaptation
