DHEA: a fountain of youth.

For lowering cortisol, improving cognitive function & mood, vibrant skin and fat loss, it might be just what you need.

Here’s why researchers have called aging “DHEA deficiency syndrome:”

DHEA nearly cuts cortisol in half.

Supplemented at 25 mg per day.

DHEA directly acts on the enzyme that produces cortisol and suppresses its production.

With aging and disease, cortisol rises relative to DHEA.

DHEA improves metabolic health.

50 mg / day:

◇ Reduces body fat percentage
◇ Reduces belly fat
◇ Lowers inflammation
◇ Lowers blood sugar
◇ Lowers triglycerides
◇ Lowers insulin

opposing all of the actions of cortisol, and improving thyroid function.

DHEA levels peak in early adulthood and decline with aging.

The ratio of DHEA (or DHEA-S) to cortisol is an excellent predictor of:

◇ Death
◇ Heart disease
◇ Cancer
◇ Depression
◇ Alzheimer's

in other words - essentially any condition associated with age / poor health.

Low DHEA, high cortisol doubles risk of early death.

Everything cortisol does, DHEA opposes:

⇨ Causes feelings of stress
⇨ Impairs immunity
⇨ Packs on abdominal fat
⇨ Breaks down bone, skin and muscle
⇨ Worsens metabolism

Leaving cortisol unopposed is a death sentence.

50 mg DHEA / day reduces abdominal fat + improves insulin resistance.

➜ Lowers / balances out cortisol
➜ Is a sex steroid precursor
➜ Ups IGF-1
➜ Increases PPARα (improves fat metabolism)
➜ Improves mitochondrial function
➜ Ups antioxidant status

DHEA is a powerful antidepressant.

People taking 30 mg / day (titrated up to 90 mg) improved depression by >30%.

Improvement in DHEA-S status is a reliable way to predict if someone will improve overcome depression.

DHEA rescues the brain from damage, toxicity.

Excess excitation of the brain can destroy cells in the brain, but DHEA has the remarkable ability to prevent this.

This process is seen in cognitive decline, as well as in mental health conditions like:

➔ PTSD
➔ Anxiety
➔ OCD

DHEA is a potent mood stabilizer.

DHEA decreases connectivity between the emotion center (amygdala) of the brain and other regions.

This is responsible for less negative affect: more positive, content feeling of yourself.

Less influence of emotions on your perception of reality. More stability.

DHEA boosts testosterone.

Both men and women typically see a big drop-off in this vital androgen with age.

This results in lower libido, poorer body composition, strength, altered mood, among other issues.

Plugging DHEA back in can help restore T, as it is a direct precursor.

DHEA blocks estrogen, prevents cancer metastasis.

While DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and can raise levels, it functionally opposes it.

As estrogen promotes the spread of breast cancer, DHEA prevents it.

DHEA promotes youthful skin.

50 mg / day was shown to improve:

➥ Sebum production
➥ Pigmentation
➥ Skin hydration

all contributing to a more youthful look.

DHEA prevents skin aging.

Another study showed topical DHEA could prevent the age related "thinning" of the skin - primarily a result of unopposed cortisol breaking down tissue.

This created thicker, more healthful appearing skin.

DHEA reduces artery stiffening.

Another process common with advancing age is how our arteries lose flexibility, becoming more stiff as heart health worsens.

50 mg DHEA was actually able to not only prevent this from worsening, but actually improve arterial stiffness with age.

DOSING DHEA:

The main concern with DHEA supplementation is that it can indeed raise estrogen levels as a precursor.

If you struggle with high estrogen, I would be cautious and start low, 2-5 mg perhaps. This is just based off of experience.

However, all of the studies I have seen typically dose it 25-50 mg for improved mood, stress, body composition, etc.

DHEA also tends to raise testosterone, and has functional anti-cortisol and anti-estrogenic properties.

Ultimately, it will be different for everyone, but playing around with doses in this range seems logical.

As far as I am aware there is no risk of suppressing endogenous production with supplementing.

Endogenous DHEA production is promoted by better mitochondrial function + antioxidant status, which DHEA supplementation improves.
