@ShabanaMir1

I had a shock in my anthropology class today.

A student appeared on Zoom--right at the end of class. I was a bit irritated by the tardiness, when I realized -

He was zooming in from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. At 4 am. In a shelter of metal sheets, draped in fabric.

He didn't calculate the time zone right, he explained. Of course, of course, no problem, I hastened to say. I'm so happy to have you in class. Here is something you can do before our next class, and here is my email.

He emailed me soon after and my heart just broke ❤️‍🩹💔

Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar are not allowed to study or work.

He really, really wanted to sit in on class and learn.

My heart is shattered and I wanted to share with you. Please keep our Rohingya family in your prayers.

Please, please include Rohingya students in your educational institutions. Offer scholarships. Accommodate their statelessness.

They are losing years of their lives just waiting to return home, stuck in open-air prisons.

And, of course, please accommodate all stateless and refugee students and students in warzones.
