I just walked out of a session with an ADHD teen and I'm honestly speechless. They explained executive dysfunction in a SINGLE sentence. It’s better than any textbook definition I’ve ever read. 1. They said:

“My brain keeps giving me instructions my body doesn’t follow.” The room went completely silent after that.

2. From the outside, people usually see: • procrastination • inconsistency • unfinished tasks • “not trying hard enough” But internally, the experience feels completely different.

3. The ADHD kid explained they often know EXACTLY what needs to happen They think about: • the task • the deadline • the responsibility • the consequences constantly. The awareness is there the entire time.

4. The problem starts when the brain tries to translate intention into action That’s when the nervous system suddenly feels: • overwhelmed • mentally stuck • frozen • unable to fully activate movement even while wanting to move.

5. They described it as feeling trapped between two realities One part of the brain saying: • “Get up.” • “Start now.” • “Do the thing.” while another part feels physically locked in place.

6. The most painful part was what they admitted next They said: “People think I don’t care… while I’m mentally fighting myself all day long.” Nobody in the room spoke after that.

7. That moment explained why ADHD becomes emotionally exhausting so quickly Because many ADHD teens are constantly carrying: • self-frustration • pressure • unfinished tasks • mental noise • guilt about not moving sooner all at the same time.
