Maybe I’m wrong but I thought the fact that Clark was black and his therapist and wife were white was intentionally done to deepen his sense of isolation. His talks about hating their perceptions of him and wanting an apology from Barbara for 1/? x.com/trizzfilm/stat…

Being wrong about him and one from his therapist for assuming he was crazy. Man feels thrown away by society and misunderstood, forced to conform to a vision of himself that he isn’t, and feels that especially with his white wife takes on another level when you consider 2/?

Even pirate Clark, the distortion of Clark’s memory, doesn’t seem angry when it’s chasing Mary. It looks desperate and lonely. It wants to connect with her but the only way it knows how is violence. I thought the racial themes were intentional but maybe I’m wrong

The monster version of Clark is a distorted memory of him that only expresses itself through violence. Key concept of the backrooms is that these are distorted and incorrect perceptions of real life people. Clark’s true complicated nature being flanderized is the point.

The captain-the embodiment of the idea that Clark is evil and irredeemable kills him. The idea kills him. Partially because he embraced it. I don’t think the film is saying the idea the captain embodies is correct.

black peoples mental health is often neglected in the system. Was then and is now. I feel like captain clark could be the embodiment of that abandonment in a way.
