1/ The Poseidon intercontinental nuclear torpedo is a very stupid idea, says Russian writer and blogger Maxim Kalashnikov. He lambasts it as a huge waste of Russia's resources which is likely to be highly vulnerable to interception and wholly ineffective in practice. ⬇️
2/ Recent reports that the much-hyped Poseidon will soon be undergoing sea trials on a purpose-built carrier submarine have attracted a scathing response from Kalashnikov. He bluntly dismisses it as a very expensive and militarily pointless propaganda exercise:
3/ "I look upon the cult of the “Poseidon” torpedo with disdain. Is it aimed at complete idiots whose minds have been shaped by Hollywood and who’ve forgotten their high school physics? Or at impressionable retirees?
4/ "If the “Poseidon” strikes anyone, it’s the Russian Federation’s budget.
5/ "The carrier of the “Poseidon” is the enormous submarine Belgorod. It has no stealth whatsoever. If it emerges from the cover of the Russian Navy's anti-submarine surface forces, it will be sunk by American submarines.
6/ "Because they will be hot on the Belgorod’s tail (our sonar is weaker than America’s) and will destroy it with a torpedo the moment ours begin launching “Poseidons.” This means they’ll have to fire them from a distance to avoid leaving the protection of their surface fleet.
7/ "If the torpedo is launched from a distance, the “Poseidon” will take at least a day to reach its target, its roar (the torpedo travels through a cavity) echoing across half the Atlantic. Its speed is no more than seventy knots.
8/ "The Yanks will be able to destroy the blind and deaf “Poseidon” on a head-on course. By the time it completes its 24-hour journey, the war between Russia and the US, with its exchange of nuclear missile strikes, will already be over.
9/ "At best, the “Poseidon” will reach the dead, radioactive ruins of coastal cities. And what the hell for?
10/ “Poseidon” is useless as a first-strike weapon (it’s 40 times slower than a ballistic missile), and it’s pointless as a retaliatory weapon. All because of energy inefficiency. If you strike New York with three “ballistics,” God forbid the Yanks intercept even one.
11/ "The remaining two, each releasing three warheads, will detonate over the metropolises at an altitude of about half a kilometre unleashing the full energy of the nuclear explosions onto the enemy’s stronghold. And the strikes will be precise. Right where they’re aimed.
12/ "The “Poseidon” is not precise (it does not strike the target directly, exploding in the water near the target), losing tens of percent of the nuclear explosion’s energy to create a pseudo-tsunami.
13/ "And only then does the wave, having lost even more energy along the way, crash onto the shore. I’m sorry, but it’s better to strike the same targets quickly and without energy loss using nuclear “ballistics.”
14/ “Poseidons” will never create a real tsunami. For a tsunami is not born from a point-source energy release, but from the frontal buckling of the edge of a tectonic plate. The energy released here is equivalent to hundreds of “Poseidons.”
15/ "And the wave does not travel as an expanding circle from the centre, but as a front over the displaced tectonic plate. A “Poseidon” would therefore create a wave that is much weaker than a real tsunami.
16/ "Finally, what good are slow and ineffective “Poseidon” nuclear delivery systems to us if the US doesn't have an impenetrable nationwide missile defence system?
17/ "And even if the “Golden Dome” does appear, wouldn’t it be easier to breach it with a massive attack of intercontinental ballistic missiles flying at near-space velocity, equipped with both multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles…
18/ …and a plethora of missile defence penetration systems? Conclusion: we are witnessing a colossal military-technical dead end with enormous damage to the Russian Federation’s own economy. Precious resources are being squandered on PR nonsense.
19/ "Meanwhile, Madyar’s drone operators are beginning to destroy our UAVs using drones armed with buckshot. Maybe, instead of “Poseidons,” we should create our own fighter drones? One useless “Poseidon” is worth thousands of fighter drones capable of firing buckshot." /end
