Yan Diomande is a prototypical 1v1 winger — combining elite athleticism, dribbling and ball-carrying with sharp decision making in the final third. At 181cm, he’s a physical standout. Reached 35.98 km/h in the Bundesliga this season and has the engine to sprint repeatedly across 90 minutes. High upside, high intensity, high impact.
On the ball, Diomande usually hugs the touchline, but he also drops deep to help defensively — he’s not the type of winger who camps in the final third waiting for service. Once he receives it, there’s one objective: drive forward and damage the opponent. His 7.10 progressive carries per 90 place him just behind Vinicius Jr. (7.40), and the comparison doesn’t stop there. Like Vini, he’s a relentless ball-carrier and high-volume dribbler, attempting nearly 7 per 90 with a strong 64% success rate. When he runs at defenders, he’s almost impossible to stop — tight control, real pace, and excellent ball protection.
In terms of playmaking, Diomande has a wide range of tools. He’s comfortable threading passes between the lines or delivering crosses, but he’s at his best in transition — firing low balls and cutbacks into dangerous areas. Much like Vini, he thrives when the game opens up, and with time he should grow more creative against low blocks, a key trait for any top side he joins. His shot-creating and goal-creating actions both rank in the 90th percentile among wingers across Europe.
Despite a limited sample of matches in Spain and Germany, Yan Diomande has already shown he can produce goals and assists at a high level. With just 14 starts (23 appearances), he’s registered 6 goals and 3 assists — a strong 0.65 G/A per 90. That output places him in the same productivity bracket as Vinicius Jr. and Jérémy Doku, two of Europe’s most dynamic wingers. He’s also carried that form onto the international stage, scoring for Ivory Coast in World Cup qualifiers, finding the net in both matches.
What truly separates Diomande from Vinicius Jr. is his work ethic — he’s a willing, committed defender. He tracks back, presses aggressively when asked to, drops deep to support full-backs, and reacts instantly to rebounds and loose balls. Statistically, he more than doubles Vinicius’ defensive involvement, posting well over 10 defensive actions per 90 compared to Vini’s 4.5 — covering tackles, interceptions, blocks and recoveries. A complete team player: on the ball, off the ball, in attack and in defense.
When it comes to weaknesses, Diomande can be a bit careless in possession. He records a high number of miscontrols and dispossessions in non-dribbling situations. With his pace giving him such a natural advantage over most defenders, he sometimes relaxes too much in static moments and doesn’t always react quickly enough before a defender pokes the ball away. It’s a minor issue when weighed against his obvious potential and current level, which already looks Champions League level worthy. Personally, I think the ceiling is extremely high — he just needs consistent minutes to prove what both the eye test and advanced metrics suggest - he’s one of the most promising young wingers in the game. Stylistically, he says he plays like Vini and that's absolutely true, but I’d also add Jeremy Doku to the comparison — especially this season, given the work rate and unstoppable dribbling. While his idol is Kylian Mbappe, and you can see flashes of that influence in certain finishes, Mbappe’s mastery of exploiting space puts him on an another level.
