If we really want to talk about developing athletes, we have to dig deeper into the qualities that make them elite. That’s often a difficult conversation, because some of these things aren’t as easily measurable as a vertical jump, a bench press, a squat, or a broad jump.

Those metrics are still useful and we still want to improve them, but at the end of the day, the organization of skilled, efficient movement relative to one’s sport or competitive movement is what actually matters. We have to look deeper into our preparation. It’s great that an

athlete can squat a big number, but how do they manage collisions with the ground? It’s great that they can pull heavy on a trap bar, but how do they explode off the line in their sport? It’s great that they’re fast and can jump high, but how do they apply that speed in

the game? There’s sophistication in the simplicity of all this. At their core, athletes need to be strong, fast, and powerful, but those adjectives only mean something if they show up in sport. If they don’t transfer, they don’t matter. These are the questions I’m always

asking when I design programs…how to build athletes whose strength, speed, and power carry over to the field or court. That’s exactly what I break down in my new program/ebook, Speed Kills, how to train force, coordination, and sprint mechanics.
