The Dragon Ball Daima Japanese 4K UHD is here and it's... something. Brought to you by resident expert @Krycek7o2

With this being a Japanese release, there are NO English subtitles or English audio tracks. Instead, you'll get Japanese LPCM Stereo and DTS-HDMA 5.1 surround sound. The audio is a substantial upgrade over the Web-DL.

The video, however, has issues. We know from production files that Daima was made in 1080p, so a 4K would be upscale. That could still offer some benefits such as increased chroma resolution. Instead...

... the 4K version is overly sharped to the point where intense "halo" artifacts appear. You can see these halos in the linework. Notice this problem is not present in the web version.

As pointed out here, this sharpening even causes unintended colors to appear. <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/AnimeAjay/status/1941632616093847633" color="blue">x.com/AnimeAjay/stat…</a>

A closer view for anyone looking on a small screen. Despite being a 4K UHD, it not authored in HDR, which isn't necessarily bad, as the Daima was produced in SDR. But having the same SDR color space makes the video source here pretty useless for those looking for the best.

The one silver lining to all this is the HD Blu-Ray does not have these problems. The Blu-Ray is slightly better looking than the web version (though it may be hard to tell in one picture) while still including the exact same audio tracks as the 4K UHD version.

If your name is Bob and you want the Best, Bob, you'll have to wait for some work using the JP HD Blu-Ray. In the meantime, here's the 4K UHD if you really want it. aHR0cHM6Ly9ueWFhLnNpL3ZpZXcvMTk4OTc1OA==

Social media compresses video, but this looks fine on YouTube for this example. Some scenes you can compare yourself: SSJ4 Scene BD <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRP-9jXrH-I" color="blue">youtube.com/watch?v=tRP-9j…</a> SSJ4 Scene 4K UHD <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWVkvDtn2x0" color="blue">youtube.com/watch?v=IWVkvD…</a> Ending BD <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkSEepxSWSw" color="blue">youtube.com/watch?v=xkSEep…</a> Ending 4K UHD <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf_-i0WBx5s" color="blue">youtube.com/watch?v=hf_-i0…</a>
