This might be one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a coach. Sometimes coaches become a slave to their program. They assume that because they wrote it down, they have to follow that plan. That mindset can be restrictive and even harmful. Programming isn’t coaching.

Coaching is using your eyes, making adjustments, and staying flexible. Progression is rarely perfect or linear. Your program can’t be either. You’re dealing with a complex system, the human body. It’s unpredictable. You can make forecasts, but you’ll be wrong. Often.

So where do you go when that happens? That’s why you need a plan B. And a plan C. You have to be ready for whoever shows up that day. Ask how they feel. Watch their warm-up. Adjust accordingly.

For example, last week I had an athlete do a harder speed endurance session. I actually gave him the option between two workouts. I like letting athletes be active in the process. They need to have skin in the game.

He performed really well in the runs, but his legs were pretty gassed after. I had a general idea about what I thought we would do that day, but had to adjust on the fly. Because training isn’t just about that day. It’s about that week. That month. That season.
