How Oxygen saturation drives growth and you can improve it through mastering the Buteyko method. Welcome in this 20 part series where on this account every few days a new post will be available about an unorthodox method you can use to grow taller. Part 7/20 It has been well known that when an organism grows up in a high Oxygen environment it grows bigger than it's counterparts that are growing up in a low Oxygen environment. (effect of atmospheric Oxygen levels on Alligators: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…) But eventually it is more about the Oxygen that is IN your body than the Oxygen outside of your body. Oxygen is carried by red blood cells throughout your entire body where it is bound to Hemoglobin, for Oxygen to enter the Mitochondria (where it is used to produce energy in the form of ATP) the Oxygen needs to be detached from the Hemoglobin to enter the Mitochondria. This is where you need to know about the Bohr-effect. The Bohr-effect in short: "The Bohr effect is a phenomenon first described in 1904 by the Danish physiologist Christian Bohr. Hemoglobin's oxygen binding affinity is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. Since carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid, an increase in CO2 results in a decrease in blood pH, resulting in hemoglobin proteins releasing their load of oxygen. Conversely, a decrease in carbon dioxide provokes an increase in pH, which results in hemoglobin picking up more oxygen." A decrease in carbon dioxide (Co2) ultimately has the effect of Hemoglobin binding more strongly to Oxygen and thereby less Oxygen entering the cell, lowering Oxygen saturation in the cell. When you hyperventilate you are breathing so fast that your body is eliminating more Co2 than the body can produce, this is when pH levels will rise and Oxygen will have a harder time to enter the cell, even though you are inhaling 'more' Oxygen, it doesn't matter because it is not entering the cells. The Buteyko method is the complete opposite of hyperventilation, you primarily focus on two things: - Breathing through the nose - Reducing breathing rate and breathing volume When your exhales are longer than your inhales and you breathe minimal amounts per day, you will retain more Co2, lowering your blood pH levels, and have more Oxygen in your cells. (leading to more growth) If you want to learn how you can start to practice this breathing technique, check out the post on the Buteyko Method on the Instagram page: instagram.com/_aestheticprim… Oxygen saturation and growth: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… Funnily enough, bigger animals also tend to breathe less per minute, increase your Oxygen saturation by breathing less!
