Arab & Islamic colonialism in Palestine from the early 1800s onwards - short🧵 1. Egyptians fleeing from and imported by Muhammad Ali, Governor of Egypt, occupied Palestine in 1831 and remained in control of the region for the next decade. besacenter.org/palestinians-s…

2. Chechens, Circassians, and Turkmen were relocated by the Ottoman Empire in the 1860s after its wars with Russia. blogs.timesofisrael.com/visiting-israe…

3. Tribes of Bedouins also migrated into Palestine during the 1800s researchgate.net/publication/32…

4. The permanent Arab population in Mandate Palestine increased by approx 120% from 1922 - 1947 as Jews brought new technology, infrastructure & jobs.

5. Many Palestinian fellahin (peasants) had worked under an oppressive Arab feudal system. Jews legally purchased land (much of it swamp and desert) and provided new work opportunities. x.com/EinatWilf/stat…

6. The influx of Arab workers into Palestine is well documented. x.com/baytifirasik/s…

7. Bosnian Muslims have also colonised parts of Palestine. palestine-studies.org/en/node/195938

8. Summary - a detailed analysis of colonialism in Palestine from the 7th Century onwards demonstrates that many waves of settlers have mixed with the indigenous population. adin1664.medium.com/palestinians-h…

9. Footnote - In 1834, Egypt deported 20% of the Arab peasant population (out of approx 160k total). As of 1920, more than half of Arabs living in what became Mandatory Palestine had migrated within the past 3 generations. By 1940 it was more than 2/3. books.openedition.org/ifpo/483

10. Further note - from the 7th Century onwards, all non-Muslims in the Islamic Empire were forced to pay the 'jizyah', a tax on 'dhimmi' or '2nd class' citizens. This discriminatory measure pushed some Native people to leave Palestine. jewishvirtuallibrary.org/the-treatment-…

And the majority of Israeli Jews are, of course, from the Middle East and North Africa following the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the entire region. thetower.org/article/there-…
