βοΈThe h2-h3 trend is real! Let us see how it can help you challenge the Sicilian Defense π Our starting position is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 and we basically pre-move 3.h3 as it works well whatever Black plays on move 2! Here's a 𧡠with some basic presentation of the main ideas π

The move h2-h3 is useful in many Sicilian main lines. It is also a main move in various Anti-Sicilians. By playing 3.h3, White challenges Black to come up with a useful move that will still allow them to play their favorite main line Sicilian. That's not easy!π

Let's say 2...d6 3.h3 Nf6 4.Nc3 a6 5.a4 (D) Obviously, Black tries to get a Najdorf. So, how should they play now? This position is trendy lately, especially in online games. A main line continues: 5...Nc6 6.d4! cxd4 7.Nxd4 and White scores massively here! Why? π

The idea is that Black's set up has allowed Nxc6 and a4-a5 with a healthy advantage! This works against any of the ...e6, ...g6, ...e5 moves. What else could a Najdorf player do?π

What about 5...b6? (D) This was the choice of GM Wei Yi. Now White goes 6.d4 cxd4 7.Qxd4! and if 7...Nc6 8.Qc4 with Nc3-Nd5 next. What else? π

Maybe 5...e5? Now White goes 6.Bc4! (D) I am telling you, a Najdorf player will be VERY annoyed after 3.h3! π

What about 2..Nc6 3.h3? Black shouldn't have great problems here, right? Let's see the game Tari- Giri, Norway 2023: 3...Nf6 4.Nc3 d6 5.d4 cxd4 6.Nxd4 e5 7.Nxc6 bxc6 8.Bd3! Be7 9.O-O O-O 10.Qe2! (D) Modern Stockfish evaluates this position a bit better for White! π

What about 3...g6? Now White plays 4.Bb5! feeling ready to enter a Rossolimo with 4...Bxc6 next! Then, why don't we play the Rossolimo with 3.Bb5 anyway? But, after 3.Bb5 e6 is solid, but after 2...Nc6 3.h3!? e6 4.Nc3! Black faces issues with love orders again! π

Generally speaking, against the lines with ...e6, the move 3.h3 is at its best. GM Aleksienko has played a ton of online games here, scoring great: 2...e6 3.h3 Nc6 (3...Nf6?! 4.e5) 4.Nc3! Nc6 5.d4! (D) as Nd4-Nc6 gains strength after ...a6! π

I have shared ideas with h2-h3 against other major openings: vs the Scandinavian here <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/NikolaosNtirlis/status/1766113015659696609" color="blue">x.com/NikolaosNtirliβ¦</a> vs the French here <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/NikolaosNtirlis/status/1732577081932792007" color="blue">x.com/NikolaosNtirliβ¦</a> The time has come for #playh3 to become our official hashtag for these posts! Don't you think? π
