After writing 5000+ essays on the internet I've come to ONE conclusion. Writer's voice is the most important skill to master. Here are 7 writer's voice tricks to make your reader obsessed with you (in 3 minutes):
1. Write like you talk People try to write like they're smart. They use big words and are afraid t be judged. Instead, recording yourself saying the article you want to write. Then use Otter dot AI to turn it into text. Now you sound like yourself, not a professor.
2. Write the draft as an email to your best friend Tim Ferriss wrote 4-Hour Workweek as a draft in Gmail to his friend. It made the book more personal & like he was talking to one person. When I write about business I write it as a Slack message to my community. 1-1 = Better
3. Make yourself look bad The worst writer voice is a flawless one. A person who pretends they never stuffed up. I share the raw spots. Things that make me look bad. You must to or you're lying. Vulnerable equals relatable.
4. Don't be afraid to swear I love the F word. Mark Manson's book made it legal again. Swearing conveys emphasis and emotion. The younger generation treats swear words as part of the english language. If you hate swearing, get over it. Otherwise only boomers will read.
5. Add language from your hometown I'm a true blue Aussie. I drop words like "crikey" in my writing because it's how we talk at home. I mention movies like Crocodile Dundee and events like BBQs. Lean into your heritage. Where you come from helps shape where you're going.
Final Thought If you don't have a strong writer's voice you'll be replaced by ChatGPT. Harsh but true.
