He’s loud, frivolous, energetic, and although he isn’t the strongest he is very smart (probably the smartest there) and adept with a bow. The beta is very bold too. He’s taken to calling lwj “lan zhan”—not even in private when it is just the two of them.
No, he does it in public too! He is entirely shameless and has no decorum. But... at least he is useful. There have been many times when lwj has caught the beta /teaching/ other soldiers, like he is a commanding general, as if he is lwj—a captain.
And thats how lwj finds himself falling for the beta. “Somethings changed with you,” wwx says one night. They are sat alone, just the two of them, around a campfire with plain congee as their dinner. “How so?” Lwj asks curiously. “Hmm...” wwx brings a hand to his chin.
“I got it! You’re no longer mean to me!” Lwj huffs and looks away. Here he thought wwx was being serious. “When I first got here all you did was growl and glower at me, Er-Gege,” wwx says, nudging him with his shoulder. “How our friendship has grown!”
Lwj does not respond but his heart beats almost painfully in his chest. Friendship. He realizes that that is all they will ever be. Friends. Two people who knew each other in war. After all, lwj is betrothed to the beta’s omega brother— Wei Ying.
He has never met the omega, and lwj has also heard almost nothing of him. It’s almost like the Jiangs keep him in the shadows out of shame that he is not really of their own blood, much like wwx is. If he hadn’t been sent to fight in jfm’s steed, lwj would never known he’d
existed. “What’s got you looking like that?” wwx voices. Lwj purses his lips. “What... is your brother—Wei Ying—like?” He turns to wwx and see’s that the man has frozen completely. Something akin to possibly fear or sadness is etched upon his features. “Wei Wuxian?”
wwx shoots to his feet. “Uhh, I think I’ll call it in for tonight! I’m tired and we have an early day tomorrow! Goodnight!” Lwj watches in confusion and amusement as the beta runs off to his own tent.
——— It’s at the end of a hard battle against the wens, that wwx has won them, that lwj and the rest of the army realizes who and what wwx is. “You disgrace your family!” Lqr bellows. wwx bares his teeth, but there are tears in his eyes. His omega scent is cloying.
There is a satchel of medicines meant to suppress an omega’s scent and heats spilled on the ground. They had been on the road for 7 days—and in battle for 2. It was no wonder that the distress had caused wwx to enter pre-heat.
Lwj looks down at the omega—wwx—no, Wei Ying, in disappointment, hurt, and... many other emotions he cannot explain. The troops look on with similar emotions to lwj. “Please, I can explain!” wwx cries.
“What is there to explain!? You should be executed for this!” “I did it to save Jiang Fengmian! You have to understand, he is si—!” “Silence!” lqr barks sharply. “Wangji decides your punishment!” wwx’s glassy eyes slide to lwj.
“Lan Zhan...” “Do not utter his name!” Lwj gazes down at him and does not speak a word. wwx has saved them all. he has deceived them. And he is also.... Lwj’s betrothed.
