Have you ever wondered why Yorozu is naked? me too but ill explain that more clearly in this thread 🧵

honestly i originally viewed yorozu wanting to be naked as autonomous and just "wanting to set them free" (obvs her tits) but this really does not match heian-era logic at all, especially within the clan shes in and how unfree women were during the period.

for those who dont know yorozu is actually a member of the fujiwara clan, a historical japanese clan known for aristocratic logic and incest for politics, the incest factor is interesting, since, yorozu was taken in despite being unrelated for her strength.

yorozu being taken in after defeating members of a group already breaks traditional fujiwara logic.

she's not really operating inside aristocratic legitimacy but rather sorcerer dominance logic.

so knowing this we have established 3 things:
1. yorozu is strong
2. yorozu has been taken into the fujiwara clan
3. strong sorcerers seem to be exempt from aritocratic logic

these factors combined are pretty interesting to me because it causes me to believe they were less strict with yorozu since she is frequently cited as one of the strongest of the heian period (obviously not as strong as sukuna)

you may be like, okay what does this have to do with yorozu being completely fucking naked? well, as mentioned the historical fujiwara clan was pretty strict with women, they were shut-in, they had to follow rules set on them, they barely did anything, and had little freedom..

yorozu doesnt really follow many strict rules and beauty standards of the heian period, its honestly very interesting because clothing during this period was traditional in the way that it was actually rude to look women in the face rather than their clothes, yorozu wears none

and actually the beauty standards itself is pretty interesting, i found that yorozu follows a few, but lacks certain distinctive features such as having black teeth and painted white faces and necks (which i will come to think is aesthetic choice rather than historical accuracy)

@SolarDTM
however yorozu actaully follows a few beauty standards for the time, one distinct appearance she shares is the common practice of painting over the eyebrows

this particular piece in general really striked me, since it has both the painted eyebrows and long hair standards of heian era women, this leads me to believe for design choice/aesthetic factor gege just wanted to prioritize these rather than the paint on face and teeth

so now in general im wondering here, is she free from the fujiwaras? is it like a toji situation to where she can kill the entire clan but chooses not to? i honestly think shes not as free as it seems, heres why:

with someone like toji, the point is explicit: hes structurally outside the system. no cursed energy, no clan obligation that can meaningfully bind him, and his livelihood depends on contracts he chooses. he can walk away from any family structure because he already exists outside its logic.

but with yorozu its different, even though she has overwhelming strength, she still seems situated inside a clan framework rather than completely detached from it. the fact that she is “taken in,” observed, and at least loosely associated with the fujiwara clan implies she is not purely self-standing. what’s more important is that nothing in her portrayal suggests she is actively rejecting the system the way toji does. she isn’t escaping hierarchy she’s bending it around herself (likely for her attachment)

@SolarDTM
so now the question is why would she stay with the clan instead of eradicating them?

the manga doesnt give a specific political reason (like ambition or clan allegiance). but it frames yorozu through obsession. her attachment is almost entirely centered on desire and fixation especially her on her worship of sukuna. in that framing, the fujiwara aren’t a “home” or a “system she respects.” they’re basically background infrastructure that allows her to exist in the era without being erased.

to me, yorozu reads less like someone navigating aristocratic power and more like someone who has already mentally stepped outside social meaning entirely. that’s why she feels hard to pin down as “oppressed” or “rebellious” she’s not really engaging the system in either direction.

so what do i think in general? i think yorozu is semi-autonomous, in the sense that shes free to do MOST things within these systems to her own will, but i do generally believe she is not autonomous in nature, her entire existence is dependent on another individual and i do think that part of the reason she is even involved with the fujiwara clan is to get closer to sukuna (or maybe something similar to this, since they are having whole ass harvest festivals for him)

honestly in general i just dont think she cares about her freedom as long as sukuna is involved with it

speculative angles, yet interesting trust:

1. if she was not an aristocrat
honestly another angle you can look at this is that she wanted guaranteed housing, we dont know much of yorozus backstory but if she was to be taken into by a prestigious clan such as the fujiwaras we can assume that she is not an aristocrat by any other clan, a lot of women who literally were not under these stable rules starved a lot and had to undergo agricultural and labor-intensive tasks, obviously this is not suited for yorozu

2. if she was an aristocrat
there was a theory actually that yorozu was a zenin since she possesses construction and mai has it as well, this leads me to think she COULD'VE been an aristocrat in the past but is literally playing in both of their faces like some yojimbo ass shit, it matches her personality (especially historically as well) japanese women during this period were known to be very manipulative and trick men a lot

a great tweet about the historical trickery of women in japanese culture and how it connects to jjk theory, adds to aristocratic/zenin theory of yorozu, pretty speculative but i think if it was true it would compliment and add to her personality vastly

honestly i really favor the yorozu zenin angle a lot, because it would add to her obsession towards sukuna, her whole vibe in the manga is "I do what I want, when I want, how I want." and obsession over everything else, it genuinely compliments her character to play in their face and get in their clan just for getting closer to "marrying sukuna" while she is secretly part of another clan who doesn't even know shes trying to get closer to a man by being brought into another clan

she's opportunistically riding the strongest clan of the era like a taxi to her sukuna date

but yeah to end this thread its a mixture of her CT flexibility and historical leniancy, she would probably rather be naked for ease of her CT, but she wont ever use it in the house so im just assuming its her being free to be naked within the house bc she has freedom to be
