Just because swimmers can execute great butterfly breath timing without any pressure does not mean they’re ready to make it happen in a race.

In reality, there’s probably a ton more work that needs to be happen.

This is one of the biggest skill development misconceptions.

Learning a skill is the beginning, not the end.

Now it needs to be trained.

Take the same activities that help swimmers learn better breathing and combine them with regularly butterfly swimming.

Week by week, add a little more speed.

Week by week, add a little more distance.

Week by week, add a little more fatigue.

It’s this patient, relentless progression that allows swimmers to execute awesome butterfly skills in championship situations.

Simple, not easy.

ALL aspects of fitness need to be addressed over time.

HOW they’re addressed needs to change.

Humans aren’t great at thinking over long timescales while trying to execute in the moment.

Solution?

Plan out the basic progressions across different developmental groups.
