The West didn’t lose God.
It lost the container that made life feel coherent.

Now millions are “fine”…
but quietly hollow, anxious, and divided.

Here are 7 consequences nobody was prepared for:🧵

1/ Humans never stopped worshipping something.

Now, the "self" has become a full-time job.

Without transcendence, the psyche tries to be its OWN god.

So you:
• brand your life.
• justify your worth.
• curate your identity.
• optimize your body.

2/ The concept of community has collapsed into spectatorship.

Churches weren’t just theological spaces.
They were human playgrounds.

People:
• gathered.
• shared silence, grief, and joy.
• witnessed one another’s lives.
• synchronized their emotions together.

Today, we CONSUME each other through platforms.

Instagram. TikTok. Facebook.

There's no holding or emotional syncing.

3/ We moved from myths to metrics.

Vico’s ages weren’t “progress."

They were modes of KNOWING:
• The Divine Age: image, awe, & mystery
• The Heroic Age: story, symbol, &meaning
• The Human Age: analysis & reflection

The danger is when we get stuck in ONE age.
Vico warned that to stay stuck in the Human Age is to LIVE IN

"the barbarism of reflection."

What's that mean?

IT MEANS: Too much thinking messes with present moment awareness.

4/ Anxiety has escalated because we've lost “repair rituals.”

In older religious cultures, when you failed, hurt someone, or fell short, there was a social pathway for repair:

You named it → witnessed it → made amends → released it.

When a culture loses that, people don’t become FREER.

They become privately burdened.

5/ Therapy became the new container—then got flattened.

Therapy became one of the last places where one could be fully seen.

But when it turns into tips, tools, and symptom hacking, it becomes a technique.

Humans don’t just need coping.

They need depth: symbols, imagination, and integration.

6/ We lost forgiveness and replaced it with “being right.”

When forgiveness disappeared, people still needed moral clarity.

So they chase:
• certainty
• outrage
• ideological righteousness

7/ The soul didn’t disappear. It went underground.

People still crave:
• awe
• belongingness
• forgiveness
• renewal
