one query of chatgpt is 3 watt-hours.

gaming on your ps5 for an hour is 200 watt-hours.

watching an hour of netflix is 800 watt-hours.

a single streetlight's typical operation is 1200 watt-hours).

a digital billboard being on for an hour is 4700 watt-hours.

it's silly when people talk at length about the horrible environmental impact of ai and give a big scary-sounding number of electricity or liters of water or data center floor space without any context so you look into it and it pales to what's used by like online gaming lol.

sure. ai uses electricity and water (but not a lot of water either) to do a bunch of stuff that is silly and in a broad sense, that is bad like anything else that impacts the environment. but if you look at the numbers it's functionally irrelevant. nothing is being "depleted."

if microwaving your microwave for ten minutes one day is 110 times more (133 watt-hours) than a single chatgpt query, then there's no point fearmongering about some energy usage there because it doesn't harm the planet any more than any other technology. arstechnica.com/ai/2024/06/is-…

If you really cared about the environment, you'd focus on something like animal agriculture instead, which is the second largest contributor to human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, after fossil fuels. Try to protest about that or educate people. Maybe at least go vegan. 🤷‍♂️
