VERSES YOU DIDN'T KNOW WERE IN YOUR BIBLE

And unto *Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brothers name was Joktan.
1 Chron 1:19

*According to biblical tradition, the Hebrews are peoples descended from Shem, one of Noah's sons, through Eber, the eponymous ancestor, and Abraham.

But what does the Chronicler mean that the earth was divided?!?! Let's dig in.

Eber was Shem's great-grandson; but why should he be called the father of all his children, rather than of all Arphaxad’s or Salah’s? Probably because Abraham and his seed, from Eber, were called Hebrews. Eber himself, we may suppose, was a man eminent for religion in a time of general apostasy; and the holy tongue being commonly called from him the Hebrew, was retained in his family in the confusion of Babel, as a special token of God’s favor to him.

The name Peleg actually means divided or possibly earthquake (H6389). And it only stands to reason that when Peleg was born the Tower of Babel must have been fresh in Eber's mind. Or perhaps the name was a premonition. The Bible leaves room for either. Since the Bible gives diligent record of who begat who we can also calculate that there were 3 generations (Noah, Shem, Eber) between the Flood and the Tower Babel.

How awful! It did not take man very long to get back to his old ways even with Noah's noble stock. But once again a single man found favor in God's eyes! Eber!

How much better it is to be like Eber, the father of a family of saints and honest men, than the father of a family of hunters after power, worldly wealth, or vanities. Goodness is true greatness!

the completion of our faith is the cross but the foundation was laid by God, Moses and the prophets. we are not held to these clauses and statutes as Christ has made it so that the law hangs on the greatest commandment, and in faith in Him for the remission of our sins.

But we should look forward to the reunion of our lost spiritual brothers in Christ. it is only fitting that through Abraham they delivered us the Christ and now at the conclusion of things, we hand them the mercy and grace of the Gospel, should they accept it.
