HOW TO RAISE SIBLINGS WHO ACTUALLY LIKE EACH OTHER. By age, from a...

By age, from a mother who grew up in a rivalry and refused to host one:
1. Ages 3 to 6:
- Never compare them out loud. Not even favorably. Both kids hear a ranking
- The oldest gets privileges, never deputy-parent duty
- Let them team up against YOU: games, tickle wars, negotiations for dessert
- Correct one kid without the other watching the show
- Give them a common project with ONE shared reward. Same team, same trophy
- After fights, let them invent their own make-up ritual. Theirs will outlast yours
- Never use one as the example for the other. Examples breed enemies
- Hear complaints about each other without opening a prosecution
- Make each kid the family's consulted expert on something. Experts don't need to compete
They become rivals because the house accidentally runs a tournament, one ranking, one example, one comparison at a time.
The catch: a son and a daughter need the tournament closed differently, at every age, and most of us are refereeing on instinct.
