the reason she's so conflicted is probably because, deep down, she's always suspected ichitaka still has feelings for itsuki. katsura deliberately draws itsuki right after this plotline as a reminder to the reader that the shadow of itsuki has never left this relationship.
5
this isn't the first time. during the cultural festival night back in september, when kensuke was beating the shit out of ichitaka in the classroom, iori was standing outside the door and you could see the impulse in her body language, wanting to rush in and protect him.
6
iori is, beneath her composed exterior, a quiet berserker. in moments like these, her personality is almost identical to ichitaka's. if you're looking for the single best argument that these two belong together: they share the same reckless, throw-yourself-into-danger instinct.
8
physically positions her body behind ichitaka's back to block any follow-up attack. and the attitude behind her words is one of complete trust in ichitaka. katsura doesn't hand out romantic payoffs often, but when he does, they're so good and so sweet.
9
there's another layer to this moment though. iori has been studying itsuki's behavioral patterns: that is consciously absorbing what makes itsuki effective with men. if it were itsuki in this situation, she'd absolutely step forward to protect ichitaka; that kind of fearless
10
loyalty is one of itsuki's greatest charm points. iori has been thinking about how to surpass itsuki, so she's been asking herself in every situation: "what would itsuki do right now?" and then actively learning and imitating to shore up her own weaknesses.
11
iori has an incredibly wide emotional range, she's smart, she learns fast through direct experience (hence her future as an actress is probably bright, well, would've been). the two female leads in video girl ai also studied and mimicked each other's behavior.
12
the live-action version deleted the part where she steps forward to stop the fight, lowered the volume of her yelling, and deliberately softened iori's assertiveness, and with it the intensity of her feelings for ichitaka. it's still strong, but noticeably less than the manga.
13
this was probably an adaptation choice to make the heroine fit a more conventional tv drama mold: the traditional dream girl, rather than the fierce, confrontational woman she is in the source material.
14
it's a shame. iori's willingness to be physically aggressive in defense of someone she loves is one of the most compelling things about her, and toning it down to make her more "palatable" is a loss.
18
(iori getting off the train first can also be read as a deliberate move that she wanted ichitaka to follow her out so they could be alone together.)
19
then the two of them head straight to ichitaka's place, abandoning yuka to fall asleep in misery on the subway. during the confession scene, yuka is even kept visible in the background panels. you have to wonder if she'll just want to end it all when she wakes up alone.
21
and ichitaka happens to be the type of guy whose attractiveness in iori's eyes explodes in moments of extreme emotion whether that's anger, pain, despair. so when he's left alone on the train, that look of absolute devastation on his face, eyes glistening with unshed tears,
22
radiating a kind of tragic romantic intensity shatters iori's remaining defenses on the spot. i think that expression is what drives everything she does for the rest of the night.
24
of course, there's always something worth examining about the ethics of sharing intimate details about your romantic partner with your buddy. ichitaka does this without a second thought as he recounts the physical moments, emotional vulnerabilities, and private exchanges.
27
this first breakup can be analyzed from two completely different angles: the logic internal to the story and the logic external to it.
28
within the story, not even six hours after this breakup, the misunderstanding gets cleared up and they officially become a couple. iori herself explains she was afraid their relationship would interfere with ichitaka's exam preparation.
29
(the deeper, subconscious reason may be her lingering suspicion about itsuki, or her distrust of whether ichitaka's feelings are genuine.) so on christmas eve, when ichitaka attempted to escalate physically, she shut it down.
30
she rejected his physical advance, then rejected his request to officially date, and after that she couldn't bring herself to call him. over the following month, the less she called, the more she worried he'd started hating her; and the more she worried, the less she could bring
31
herself to call. she finally couldn't take it anymore and arranged to meet him at a café on january 21st. but right before going in, she happened to catch sight of his uncomfortable, reluctant expression through the window.
33
iori at this point hasn't yet been ground down by the professional setbacks and emotional exhaustion she'll face later in december 1999. she's not yet that dependent on ichitaka. so she decides to get ahead of him and say it first.
34
afterward she feels worse and worse, vents to yuka, gets rescued by yuka's intervention, and the misunderstanding eventually gets cleared up. that's the aftermath.
35
from a metanarrative perspective, iori has always sensed something is off about ichitaka's actual worth as a partner. her intuition keeps telling her: something is fundamentally wrong here. maybe we're not right for each other.
36
so throughout 1999, the final year of the story, iori repeatedly expresses rejection, refusal, and doubt toward ichitaka, leading ultimately to their definitive breakup (post-story).
37
in that last year, katsura begins deliberately steering iori toward fully recognizing ichitaka's inadequacy as a partner and buries a quiet breakup foreshadowing inside what appears to be a happy ending.
38
but back to after the first breakup, ichitaka trudges home depressed and finds izumi blocking his front door. (this is actually a close call. if the misunderstanding breakup hadn't happened, he'd very likely have been bringing iori home right now, and walking up to find izumi).
