While good drills can help swimmers learn skills, the real difference maker is how those drills are used in sets.

Here’s a simple rule I always follow when using drills.

Whenever I have swimmers perform a drill, I will pair it with full stroke swimming.
2
I will repeat that process as many times as I can.

Here’s why.

Good drills show swimmers a new way to move through the water.

Swimmers have to apply that insight to their swimming.

It doesn’t happen automatically, so swimmers need as many opportunities as possible to make it happen.

By using drills effectively, it’s possible to magnify the impact.

Stroke rates are a powerful way to develop key racing skills that create speed.

We can use them to help swimmers learn to be consistent with their rate AND we can help them learn how to improve their stroke length without sacrificing their stroke rate.
