Romans often used "Syrian" as synonym for general Near Easterner (as we use Arab today), as a slur it implied that the insulted person or peoples were effeminate natural-born slaves. They also used "Greekling" (generally referring to Asiatic Greeks) as a slur (see e.g. Cicero).
