I bet my life savings Christopher Nolan is the last great director of this century.

Not because of Inception, Interstellar, or Oppenheimer.

But because he found a secret method to irresistible storytelling:🧵

Nolan uses the Plot Map Technique to visualize his storyline.

He doesn’t want “constraints” to hold him back when writing the story.

So he uses this technique to help his production team visualize & then create it on screen.

Here he explains how he comes up with his ideas:

Let's take Inception as an example.

One of the most well-crafted movies of the last 50 years.

The intricate plot is a journey around dreams within dreams, jumping between layers of reality.

When asked about his inspiration — Nolan's answer shocked everyone:

Nolan's Plot Map for Inception resembles Kurt Vonnegut's "Man in Hole" story shape.

This is where the main character:

1. Faces a problem
2. Gets out of it
3. Grows from the experience

But Nolan added an interesting twist:

In Inception, as Cobb (played by DiCaprio) moves closer to the dream world of Limbo, he travels "down" the plot map toward problems.

Then, he must fight his way "up" to reality.

This not only mirrors Cobb's journey but also the movie's core concept of nested dreams:

The Plot Map keeps the story focused despite its:

• Multiple “dream” storylines
• Competing character arcs
• And ever-increasing stakes

Without the Plot Map, the story would have become unfocused and hard to follow.

Nolan planned the entire 2.5-hour Inception movie on a single page.

Other notable writers have similar practices:

Left to right:

• Norman Mailer's 1191-page Harlot's Ghost
• Henry Miller's Tropic of Capricorn
• JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Here's how to use the Plot Map Technique:

• Make a Visual Outline (shapes, arrows, visuals)
• Emphasize Key Points (incident, climax, resolution)
• Map Character Development (impact of events/themes)

This helps keep you focused while writing.
