In 1949 Israel proposed to the UN that the small area of Gaza could be annexed as part of Israel *but with full Israeli citizenship given to its population including refugees*

Some Palestinians did sign up to fight with the British army in WWII. But most deserted when they realised the Nazis might pass through Egypt into Palestine.
