Best way to do keyword research is to see what your competitors are targeting.

Easiest way to do this is through Content Gap tool Ahrefs offers.

Alternatives like Semrush also have similar features.

Step 1:

Identify and make a list of your TOP competitors.

Open your site in Ahrefs, and in the left pane click on Organic competitors.

These are your main competitors that are ranking for similar keywords as you.

Filter the ones that are the closest to what you want to achieve with SEO.

Step 2: Use Content Gap Tool.

This tool simplifies the research process for you.

It lists all the keywords your competitors are ranking for but your site isn’t.

Next, go through each keyword and analyze it’s difficulty level.

Ahrefs provides Keyword Difficulty Score (KD) but don’t rely entirely on that.

Look at the actual good links the ranking pages have.

A lot of auto generated links are also there, so make sure you count only the good links.
