Hi folks,
I'm back from an extended mental health leave and I have a career update. Two months ago, I joined the Crown's office.
My decision was spurned by an awful, and frankly, traumatic experience in private practice, which prioritized billable hours over all else.

Over the past two years, I have heard from A LOT of recent calls, many WOC, who feel like tokens at their firms. They have been passed over on interesting files and not getting necessary mentorship. Yet, they are expected to put their personal lives on hold at the drop of a hat.

They remain on the outside despite best efforts. For ex., when I attended the @Advocates_Soc 2022 Fall Forum, I could count on two hands the number of POC I saw. Is this all we could muster for folks under 10 years of call?

Ever since I finished my clerkship in 2021, I have constantly thought about leaving this profession. The worst part is that I know I am not alone.

Conformity will not bring about change in the legal profession. Complicity will not offer more than bandaid solutions to our problems.
As for our profession's seeming love of self-congratulation, esp. for EDI? Well, that's a total barrier to true disruption of the status quo.
