Izuku has been dropping by the same flower shop every day since the grumpy florist let him take shelter in it one rainy night. This morning, though, it was Valentine’s day, and Izuku was getting tired of their little will-they-won’t-they.
2
Or, Izuku pulls a prank to get a certain someone’s number.
3
If anyone asked, Izuku would say it was all Mina’s fault.
Honestly, he did nothing to encourage this behavior. Everyone in Izuku’s friend circle and then some knew about his pathetic crush on the owner of the flower shop near their campus.

4
All it took was one rainy night and a backpack full of camera equipment. Izuku didn’t have enough money to invest in one of those cool, clunky, waterproof bags. So whenever the sky decided to open up, he was forced to take shelter.
5
Luckily, he hadn’t wandered very far from campus. And though it was nearing eight o’clock at night, the florist’s orange welcome lights still flashed: OPEN.
6
He got an earful for trailing rainwater all over the shop and a foldable umbrella tossed at his head for all his troubles, but at least the grumpy florist had let him stay until the wind was more forgiving. He was angry, and blond, and not built like a florist at all.
7
Izuku would find out later that the guy was taking over for his parents while they traveled the world together. The blond merely had time on his hands, being an off-season hockey player.
8
With a promise to return the next day with the borrowed umbrella (that the blond insisted he take with him, which would have been cute if it wasn’t accompanied with several expletives), Izuku went on his merry way. And then he came back again. And again. And again.
9
Somewhere around the second time Izuku came over, he had learned that the florist’s name was Bakugou Katsuki.
Izuku always tried to find an excuse to return to the flower shop; whether it be to pick up something he had left behind,

10
or some fictional friend’s graduation flowers, or yet another rainy night. Et cetera, et cetera. Because Izuku liked their banter. He liked the back and forth. Sometimes, it was flirtatious, with Katsuki teasing him about his curls or his freckles or his cheeks.
11
Other times, miraculously, Izuku would make Katsuki blush. Like when he went around taking pictures of the shop for a photography class about atmosphere, and had accidentally captured Katsuki looking at him with so much fondness.
12
When Izuku showed it to him, the blond had simply huffed, red-faced, and said, “That’s just how I normally look, dipshit.”
Sometimes —and these times were Izuku’s favorites— Katsuki would even send him off at the end of the day with some flowers.

13
“Leftovers,” he would say. “They’re gonna die tomorrow. If you don’t take ‘em they’ll just end up in the dump.”
Which Izuku doubted, yellow as they were, but whatever.
All of this, and they haven’t even exchanged phone numbers yet.

14
And so after many sleepovers lamenting over this to Ochako and Mina, they decided to make him do something about it.
Mina hopped on his bed and declared.
“People like that can only be taken down using one method!”
“I don’t really want to take him down—”

15
“Make! Him! Jealous!” She bellowed, Ochako nodding furiously beside her.
And Izuku had to admit, a part of him stirred in interest at the concept, but he quickly shook the feeling away.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea—”

16
“It’s almost Valentine’s Day, right?” Mina said. “Pretend you have a date!”
“What?!” Izuku flushed. “He wouldn’t believe that!”
“He’ll be too busy panicking to think about it!” This time, it was Ochako who pitched in.
“Don’t encourage her!”

17
“Trust and believe, ‘Zuku.” Mina nodded sagely. “That’s how I helped ‘Chako bag Toga, after all. She went ballistic when I told her someone was thinking of asking Ochako out.”
“I know what happened to Iida.”
“I know what happened to Iida.”
18
Izuku sighed, remembering the time he got absolutely mauled by the blond girl. “Really, he was an unnecessary casualty.”
“No, he was very necessary collateral damage.” Ochako said solemnly. “It’s okay though. I bought him dinner after.”

19
Izuku groaned. “I don’t even know if Kacchan likes me back!”
“I can help you find out! ‘Zuku, I swear I will never pester you about this ever again if you give it a shot.” Mina leaned forward and gave him the biggest puppy dog eyes known to man. “Please?”

20
Izuku thought about it and sighed. Hell, what did he have to lose?
“Tell me what you have in mind first, and maybe I’ll consider it.”
Mina’s lips stretched into a wide, creepy grin. “Your mom’s birthday is on Valentine’s, right?”

21
Three hours worth of brainstorming and arguments later, and here he was on the night of Valentine’s Day standing in front of Sunshine Fields, dressed in his best casual clothes and a stupid, stupid plan.
22
He took in a deep, deep breath before pushing the store’s door open. There were more people in it than usual at this time of night, so close to closing time. What was left of the Valentine’s rush, no doubt. Izuku took in the sparse buckets of flowers and bouquets.
23
It looked like it had been a warzone here.
Then, he spotted the person he was looking for on the counter.
“Kacchan!”
Katsuki looked up from the customer on the register, giving Izuku a tired nod. It was only after he finished checking out did Izuku come closer.

24
“Nerd.” Katsuki grumbled in greeting. “You really got nothing else better to do on Valentine’s Day?”
Izuku perked. Mina told him to seize the first opening he saw to flaunt his fake date. This was as good an opening as any, right?

25
He could do this. He spent the entire last few days practicing how this would all play out.
“Actually,” Izuku said smugly. “I have a valentine.”
Katsuki snorted as he sorted out the cash in the register, as if Izuku was telling a joke. “Your ugly cat doesn’t count, Deku.”

26
“I’m serious!” Izuku pretended to pout. “I’m not here to hang out. I’m here to buy her a bouquet.”
“Ha ha.” Katsuki scoffed.
The blond looked up from the bills in his hand, ready to tease Izuku some more, until he saw the offended look on his freckled face.

27
Katsuki’s face flattened. “You’re serious.”
“As a heart attack.” Izuku frowned, feigning confusion.
He could practically see the gears turning in Katsuki’s head. What was once a snide expression was slowly descending into… what was it that Mina told him? Anger? Annoyance?

28
She had said to look out for these sorts of reactions. That it was a good sign.
Izuku stifled a smile as he saw Katsuki’s brows furrow.
“What?” He snapped. “Since fucking when. What’s her name?”
“You wouldn’t know who she is even if I told you.” Izuku shrugged.

29
Then, he gushed. “It’s her birthday today, too. Isn’t that so cool? To have your birthday on Valentine’s?”
Katsuki muttered something under his breath that Izuku couldn’t pick up, face pinched.

30
“Sounds like a lucky fuckin’ girl.” Katsuki drawled, something in his voice gruff. The tiniest bit passive aggressive.
“I like her so much.” Izuku hummed, but the sarcastic edge of his tone was lost as he saw Katsuki’s jaw tighten. “I’m gonna get her a custom bouquet.”

31
“Fucking knock yourself out.” Katsuki nodded towards the almost empty selection of flowers.
Izuku continued chattering as the last of the customers trickled out of the shop, picking out stalks of blooms that matched a vaguely warm-toned composition,

talking about how it was his valentine’s favorite color. He watched Katsuki’s face in the corner of his eye, noting how he got even redder— but not like the times where Izuku teased him. No, this was the kind of flush Katsuki got from annoying customers and TV show spoilers.
33
He was getting genuinely angry.
Izuku feigned cluelessness as he brought over his selected flowers to the counter, where the bouquet was to be assembled. He watched the blond’s face as his eyes swept over the blooms.
Katsuki paused when his fingers danced over the first flower.

34
His expression turned sour, a flash of bitterness overcoming his features. Orange lilies. Izuku knew they were his favorite. When Katsuki first told him about them, Izuku had said he didn’t even know that orange lilies existed.
35
Katsuki’s dejection only lasted a moment. He schooled his expression back to cool indifference, though he gripped the stalks with much more force than necessary.
Assembling the bouquet was quick with the blond’s trained hands, not saying a word the whole time.

36
The flowers were tied into a tight bundle and wrapped with white paper.
“Actually, can I have the orange paper?” Izuku interjected. Katsuki’s hands paused in midair.
“It’ll match the lilies more, don’t you think?”

37
Katsuki was silent as he untied the white paper, replacing it with a shimmery orange one that matched the flower shop’s sign. His brows were furrowed, as if in concentration, but Izuku saw the way his jaw was clenched. He thought back to the signs Mina told him to look out for.
38
“He’ll either start getting real loud, or real quiet,” she had said, nodding wisely. “Depends on the person. But you should know when he starts to feel really jealous about it. That’s when you should deliver the final blow.”
39
Izuku tamped down a smile as he leaned his hip against the counter, eyeing a display of cards on the counter next to the register.
“Hey, you do notes, right?”
“Hey, you do notes, right?”
40
“What the fuck does it look like.” Katsuki didn’t even look up at him as he tied a ribbon to secure the decorative paper.
41
He jabbed a thumb towards the acrylic case. “The card ones you have to pay for, but a paper note is free.”
Izuku pretended to mull over the decision. “I’ll take the note.”
Izuku pretended to mull over the decision. “I’ll take the note.”
42
Begrudgingly, as if it physically, mentally pained him to do, Katsuki slid out a crisp piece of lavender paper from one of the drawers under the counter. He uncapped a marker.
“What do you want?”
Izuku hummed again. “Start with ‘Happy Birthday’.”
“What do you want?”
Izuku hummed again. “Start with ‘Happy Birthday’.”
43
He paused as he watched Katsuki’s hand dance across the paper, and continued again when he saw him stop.
“And then: ‘I love you so much,” Izuku waited a second before saying, “Mom’.”
“And then: ‘I love you so much,” Izuku waited a second before saying, “Mom’.”
44
Katsuki paused for a second, his grip on the marker tightening until Izuku could see his knuckles whiten. Izuku suppressed a fit of laughter behind his hand as he saw Katsuki flush a deeper red, but this time not out of anger.
45
“Mom?” Katsuki repeated with a hiss, looking more annoyed by the second.
“Yeah.” Izuku said casually. He dismissively picked at the decorative paper of his bouquet. “Don’t forget the heart over the ‘i’.”

46
Katsuki’s eye might have twitched. “The ‘I’ is capitalized.”
“I’m talking about the one in ‘birthday’.”
Katsuki huffed out a sharp breath and begrudgingly complied. His motions were sharp and concise as he went over to the top of the note.

47
When he slipped the paper on the counter for Izuku to approve, it wasn’t without sharpness and attitude. He saw Katsuki’s neat, capitalized script. Everything that Izuku imagined from him, but not necessarily the type of script one would expect on a bouquet of flowers.
48
Izuku thought Katsuki would be trained to do something more… flowery.
He tried to suppress a laugh when he saw a blotch of ink at the start of ‘M’ for ‘Mom’, where Katsuki had no doubt held the marker down for too long.
“Looks like you’re yelling at her.” Izuku teased.

49
Katsuki rolled his eyes. “It’s how we do things here.”
“You’re the only employee.” Izuku grinned at Katsuki’s impatient face.
“Total’s on the fucking register, asshat,” he grumbled as he rang it up.

50
Izuku pursed his lips as he handed over a few bills, watching Katsuki’s contorted face. He wanted to say that there was some semblance of relief there, but there was also embarrassment, and anger. All of which he was too stubborn to properly convey. Izuku grinned.
51
“What’s wrong, Kacchan?” Izuku goaded. “You look upset. Was it something I said?”
Katsuki looked up at him with a glare, averting his eyes at the mischievous look he found.
“Fuck off.” He said, as he aggressively fished out coins out of the register.

52
“Could it be that you were…” Izuku waggled his brows, “...jealous?”
The blond slid both his hands over his face, fuming and muttering curses.
And in that action alone, Izuku got his answer. There was no doubt about it: Katsuki liked him back.

53
If he hadn’t, Izuku would be dead by now for throwing this prank in the first place. But it looked like Katsuki was too relieved to even be properly mad.
“You—” Katsuki choked, shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re so fucking…”
“You—” Katsuki choked, shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re so fucking…”
54
“You’re jealous.” Izuku drawled, propping his chin up on his palm as he watched Katsuki’s annoyance unfold. “Of my mom.”
“And you’re the loser with her as your fuckin’ valentines!” Katsuki roared, red-faced, throwing his change back at him.

55
Izuku burst into laughter as he was pelted with coins, holding onto the counter for dear life. It was pouring out of him, his eyes watering from the force of his mirth. He couldn’t believe it worked. Just wait until Katsuki found out it was all Mina’s idea. She would be done for.
56
Katsuki shook his head as he watched Izuku come down from his bout of laughter.
“You’re such a fucking idiot.”
“You’re such a fucking idiot.”
57
“So,” Izuku said as he snatched the bouquet from the counter, holding it in his outstretched hands. Katsuki was still looking at him like he was trying to figure something out. “Are you finally gonna ask for my number or what?”
58
Katsuki flushed at the sudden, bold question.
“Is this your twisted fucking way of asking me out?”
“You weren’t going to.” Izuku shrugged. “So, can I have your number?”
“Is this your twisted fucking way of asking me out?”

59
It was Katsuki’s turn this time to tilt his head, a slight smirk blooming across his lips. He raised an eyebrow as he said, “You sure your mom wouldn’t mind?”
Izuku threw the bouquet at him with a disgusted noise, and Katsuki caught it with a grin.

60
“Pathetic Valentine’s gift, by the way,” he shook the bushel of flowers in his hands.
“It’s a decoy.” Izuku assured him. “This is the real gift.”
“It’s a decoy.” Izuku assured him. “This is the real gift.”
61
He rummaged into the inner pockets of his coat and slid two slim pieces of paper across the counter. A pair of tickets to tonight’s limited showing of All Might: Golden Age, just as Mina had advised him to do.
62
“After you scare the living shit out of him, offer a consolation prize!” Mina had said. “He’ll forgive you then!”
Izuku watched as Katsuki practically threw the bouquet aside to grab them, his eyes wide. They had been talking about this movie for the longest time.
Izuku watched as Katsuki practically threw the bouquet aside to grab them, his eyes wide. They had been talking about this movie for the longest time.
63
It was a premium showing, two weeks before the general public would see them in theaters, with exclusive merch included. It had cost Izuku an arm and a leg, but it was worth it seeing Katsuki ogle the tickets now.
64
The blond split into a grin. “You beautiful, nerdy fuckin’ bastard.”
65
“So,” Izuku said, as he watched Katsuki slip out from behind the counter, “it’s a date?”
Katsuki came around and crowded him close, gentle hands coming up to cup both sides of his face.
“You bet your fuckin’ mom it is.”

“You bet your fuckin’ mom it is.”
66
Izuku didn’t even have time to blush at the proximity before he was basically tipped back with a forceful kiss, Katsuki’s face smothering him, an action so hurried and desperate like the both of them had been waiting lifetimes for this.
67
Izuku couldn’t help but smile into his lips, leaning forward to chase him, his hands reaching to hold the back of Katsuki’s head with equal urgency.
Eventually, they drew apart, both of them red-faced and grinning from ear to ear.
Eventually, they drew apart, both of them red-faced and grinning from ear to ear.
68
Izuku groaned, resting his forehead against Katsuki’s broad shoulder. “Will I ever hear the end of that?”
“No you won’t, because it was dumb as fuck,” he leaned forward quickly to give Izuku one final peck on the lips, holding his chin in place.
“No you won’t, because it was dumb as fuck,” he leaned forward quickly to give Izuku one final peck on the lips, holding his chin in place.
69
“Why couldn’t you ask me out without a heart attack, huh?”
“I thought it would be funny to see you squirm.” Izuku smiled fondly, before he patted the blond’s shoulder. “Now come on, we have to leave in five minutes if we want to make it on time.”
Katsuki’s eyes widened. “Fuck.”

Katsuki’s eyes widened. “Fuck.”
70
Immediately, he drew apart to untie his work apron, leaping over the counter to grab his bag and store keys. Closing up was done in maddening haste, and before Izuku knew it he was being ushered out of the deadened shop, the door locked behind them, two golden tickets in hand.
71
“I do have one question though.” Katsuki whispered, when they were already sitting comfortably in their seats, the lights dimming as the intro to the movie started.
“What?” Izuku whispered back, eyes glued on the screen.
“What?” Izuku whispered back, eyes glued on the screen.
72
“Is your mom’s birthday really on Valentine’s?”
“Oh my god,” Izuku groaned as Katsuki huffed out a laugh, drawing him close to give him a consolatory kiss on the top of his head. “Shut up about my mom!”
